Defined as the ratio between length of streams and the basin area, the drainage density is recognized as one of the most important morphometric variables in the environmental and hydrological analysis in watersheds. This variable depicts the drainage network efficiency in relief dissection and sediment transport. However, the use of drainage density is still limited because operational and conceptual aspects lack of a suitable methodology, mainly to analysis of spatial variability this parameter. The diversity of mathematical alternatives applied in Geographic Information System - GIS environment brings in not comparable results with different quantitative values. Thus, we aimed to suggest a quanti-qualitatively consistent methodology for the analysis of spatial variability of drainage density. The River Basin Glory, State of Minas Gerais, was defined as study area. The drainage density was calculated using a kernel density estimator in SIG environment and subsequently the numerical values obtained were compared with the drainage density gained with the traditional method of Horton. The drainage density generated by the kernel method was satisfactory, qualitatively and quantitatively, to the River Basin Glory. The parameter allowed analyzing the spatial variability of drainage density, with the support consistent numerical values that contribute to the better understanding of the dynamics of river basins.
